He says that one day he was reading the dictionary and stumbled across the word gritty (meaning to have strong qualities of tough uncompromising realism) and immediately, in his mind, converged the root-word (grit) and the first letter of his name together to make the name GRIT-D. He likes to point out the fact that his name is in all caps for the simple fact that he always thought he stood out in a crowd and there is a dash symbol within his name to symbolize the balance in his ego; the side of GRIT and the side of Dylon. Always knowing he should "never get big headed, no matter how good/bad I'm doing someone else out there has it just a little bit more worse."

GRIT-D; birth name Dylon Scot Aguilar, was born in Galveston, TX. He lived with his mother, her then-boyfriend, and two older brothers growing from the East side to the West side of the Island. He and his brothers shared every other weekend with their father, a former police officer. His father taught him how to sing at a very young age. When he was in the eighth grade he began to dive further into a broad variety of music and always knowing rap was his favorite genre, he gradually learned that he had a talent for creating better than "just good" rhymes in his mind and also his notebooks. GRIT-D was a member of his middle school and high school choir; eventually, making the decision to leave the choir to focus on his music career. GRIT-D attended Ball High School in Galveston, and graduated in 2010. He has stated that he "never had a fear of rapping in front of the class or performing on stage with or without the choir." He attended Galveston College the following Fall and Spring semesters after his high school graduation.

GRIT-D credits Z-Ro, 2Pac, Usher, Eminem, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, and J. Cole as his most inspirational influences. Aguilar claims, as a child, their talents motivated him more to make his music career more of a reality. He has said he "always had to just sit and watch his family and their struggles unfold in front of his face and [he] couldn't really do much to help the situations."
